As parents, we know there is a struggle to find a balance between teaching our kids healthy eating habits and allowing them to eat sweet treats. For some reason children don’t seem too convinced when we tell them that broccoli is actually good for them, and that candy will rot their teeth. In fact, we’re pretty sure it goes in one ear and out the other. So, instead, we’ve come up with a few healthy snacks for kids that taste like candy (this means no more bargaining or arguing). You can thank us later.
Dark Chocolate-Covered Strawberries
I know what you’re thinking. Chocolate is considered candy, right? Well, yes, but dark chocolate actually has a healthy effect on teeth. It’s actually the cocoa bean that contains strong antioxidants that have been shown to prevent tooth decay, and dark chocolate has a high concentration of cocoa–so milk chocolate is not a suitable substitute for this recipe. As we’ve discussed in a previous post, strawberries function as a natural teeth whitener and contain a large amount of vitamin C.
We have a feeling it won’t be hard to convince your kids to chow down on this healthy snack. Just be sure they brush and rinse thoroughly at night to make sure all the seeds are removed from inside the mouth. Bonus: These treats are fun, fast, and easy to make at home.
Frozen Kiwi Pops
Kiwi contains twice the recommended daily value of vitamin C, which has a huge positive impact on your teeth. Not to mention, it’s also packed with protein, carbohydrates, and fiber, so it’s a sweet treat that will actually keep your kid full, unlike a candy bar. Either invest in reusable popsicle molds, or use plastic spoons in small cups if you’re in a pinch.
Place two cups of creamy kiwi insides and one cup of water in a blender and blend until smooth. Place into molds and freeze overnight. You can replace water with nonfat Greek yogurt if you prefer creamy popsicles. Serve the next day and your kids will love this tasty, healthy snack.
Homemade Orange Froyo
The best part about frozen yogurt is that it looks almost identical to ice cream, but it reaps many more benefits. Yogurt, as well as milk, contains probiotics that ward off decay-causing bacteria in the mouth. Oranges are packed with vitamin C and strengthen teeth. Opt for a recipe with minimal added sugars, like this one, to really make the most of this naturally sweet healthy snack.
