In order for braces to be effective, each bracket and wire must be working correctly. Breaking parts of your braces could significantly slow your treatment. The easiest way to break orthodontic appliances is to eat something from the “off-limits” foods list. Here’s a list of foods to avoid when you have braces:

  • Sticky candy. Taffy, bubble gum, and gummy candies can bend brackets and wires. Any food that can pull on your braces should be avoided.
  • Hard foods. You can easily loosen a bracket if you bite into whole apples or carrots with your front teeth. Instead, cut hard foods up and chew with your molars.
  • Ice. Chewing on ice, with or without braces, wears down the enamel of your teeth. However, with an orthodontic appliance, ice can be particularly harmful.

Healthy eating is a major part of oral health, so be sure to continue eating nutritious foods as well. If you’re interested in an easy, affordable way to improve your smile, contact A Beautiful Smile at Lake Pointe today.
