Braces are a rite of passage for many children but the aesthetic fascination with straight teeth isn’t limited to modern society, in fact the desire for straight, healthy teeth dates as far back as 2000 BC.

Archeologists have discovered evidence that wires and gold bands were used to move teeth and close gaps by early civilizations but until the 18th century the art of straightening teeth was still a primitive, unscientific practice.

In the 1700s a flurry of devices and techniques to straighten teeth were born including the “blandeau” which was the first true braces like device. One hundred years later the techniques and components common in modern braces began to be implemented including the use of wires and rubber bands.

The early 20th century saw the development of orthodontic schools and professional organizations along with classification systems for misaligned teeth. A better understanding of dental problems and higher levels of professional training allowed braces to become a common component of childhood development.

As we start the 21st century, clear braces and customized orthodontic systems are becoming the new standard offering faster treatment times without many of the side effects of older systems.
