Dental Bonding

Dental Bonding is a process in which a tooth-colored resin is attached or “bonded” with a natural tooth to give your teeth that pearly white they once were. It is most often used to:

  • Repair chipped or cracked teeth
  • Fill cavities or dental caries
  • Repair misshapen or short teeth
  • Close spaces between teeth
  • Protect exposed roots caused by gum recession
  • Replace silver fillings

Bonding can be expected to last several years before needing another repair. Anesthesia is typically not used since the procedure is not invasive, unless it is being applied to a decayed tooth.

Dental Bonding Procedure

Dental bonding is an easy and painless procedure that usually lasts close to an hour for each, individual tooth. Your dentist begins by selecting the resin color that most closely resembles your natural tooth coloration. The tooth surface is then slightly roughened and a conditioning liquid applied. Afterwards the resin is applied onto the tooth surface and molded to resemble the shape of a natural tooth.  An ultraviolet light is used to harden the resin. Once the resin is firmly in place, your dentist will further trim and smooth the newly bonded surface to match your other teeth.

Dental bonding is a common and popular procedure for restoring natural and healthy smiles. Its relatively simple and inexpensive, and is widely used in restorative and cosmetic procedures.
