Crowns Q & A

Why would I need a dental crown?

Dentists use dental crowns for a variety of reasons. Dr. Jue administers crowns to:

  • Protect weak or damaged teeth
  • Cover or support large fillings
  • Hold dental bridges in place
  • Make cosmetic modifications

Dr. Jue also uses crowns on children if a tooth is too damaged to support a filling or if a child struggles to keep up with regular brushing and flossing.

What is the process for getting a traditional dental crown?

Preparing your tooth for a traditional dental crown takes two separate appointments.

At your first appointment, Dr. Jue performs a thorough oral exam and takes a series of 3D oral X-rays, examining the roots of your tooth and the surrounding bone. If you’re a good candidate for a crown, Dr. Jue then numbs your gums and tooth using a local anesthetic.

Once the anesthesia sets in, Dr. Jue carefully files down your tooth receiving the crown. Next, he makes an impression of your tooth using putty or a digital scanner. Dr. Jue then places a temporary crown on your affected tooth and sends your impressions to a dental lab, that manufactures your permanent crown.

A week later, you return for the application of your permanent crown. During this appointment, Dr. Jue removes your temporary crown and then administers a local anesthetic. Once your teeth and gums are numb, he places your permanent crown and bonds it with cement.

What is the process for getting a same-day CEREC dental crown?

CEREC or chairside crowns are made on-site using porcelain and only require one appointment.

First, Dr. Jue performs a thorough oral exam. To be a candidate for a CEREC crown, your damaged tooth must be strong enough to support a crown. If you qualify, Dr. Jue takes a series of photographs using a small, digital tool called an intraoral camera. The camera is incredibly small and takes 3D images, preventing the need for molds or impressions.

Dr. Jue uploads these photos into a computer, making a 3D digital image of your tooth and crown. Using special software, Dr. Jue can add ridges, pits, or fissures to mimic your tooth’s natural enamel. After completing the design, Dr. Jue uploads the data to an in-office milling machine that carves your new, permanent crown. When the machine finishes, Dr. Jue bonds your CEREC crown to your tooth. The process takes less than three hours and requires no follow-up appointment.
