Why do teeth turn yellow?

Believe it or not, yellow teeth are a side-effect of the natural aging process. As you get older, the hard outer layer of your teeth, called enamel, erodes away. The inside of your teeth, called dentin, is yellow in color. As your enamel becomes thinner, more dentin shows through, giving your teeth a yellowish tint.

Lifestyle choices and daily habits also contribute to the color of your teeth. For example, if you drink coffee, smoke cigarettes, or have poor oral hygiene, you’re more likely to experience yellowing or discoloration.

Are there different types of teeth whitening treatment?

Dr. Jue and the team at A Beautiful Smile at Lake Pointe offer both in-office and take-home teeth whitening treatments.

In-office whitening

In-office whitening treatment only takes about an hour and provides stunning results. In fact, some people leave our offices with a smile up to 8 shades lighter, though your individual results may vary.

During in-office teeth whitening, Dr. Jue covers your gums and tongue to protect them from exposure to the whitening chemicals. He then applies a medical-grade whitening solution to the surface of your teeth.

After the solution sits for 15 minutes, Dr. Jue points a special light at the peroxide solution. He repeats this process three different times. After your session is over, a sensitivity-reducing gel is applied to your teeth to prevent any discomfort.

Take-home whitening trays

Dr. Jue also offers custom take-home whitening trays designed to your mouth’s unique structure. These are preferable to over-the-counter products because they aren’t one-size-fits-all. A custom-fit tray ensures the whitening agent covers all of your teeth, providing noticeable, long-lasting results.

Is teeth whitening safe?

Thanks to modern cosmetic dentistry techniques, teeth-whitening is safe and well-tolerated. In addition, the majority of whitening products feature carbamide peroxide as their primary bleaching ingredient, a harmless byproduct of hydrogen peroxide.

If you’re concerned about whitening your teeth on your own, Dr. Jue can help.

Are the results of teeth whitening permanent?

Teeth whitening can brighten your smile, but the results aren’t permanent. To maintain your pearly whites, brush, and floss regularly, avoid beverages like coffee and cola and schedule a touch-up appointment with Dr. Jue every six months.
